Beautiful tabletop sculpture of Una and Lion
The story of Una and the lion comes from Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, which was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. In the poem, Una is a young princess who, separated from her knight, is protected by a fierce lion captivated by her beauty and innocence. Una represents truth and the Church.
Looks to be shaped off a mold and of bisque ceramic, but also exhibits hand-carved details.
Material and condition suggests this sculpture is pre-1940s.
Good vintage condition with some scuffs and dust in crevices.
Some yellowing coloration on sculpture from wear and age.
Black specks along the leg (see photos).
A few light chips but no major flaws or cracks.
Signed in back but ineligible.
8" height
6 3/4" x 3 1/4" bottom base
